Complete!

All done.  I just need to make a few adjustments and I'll be ready for Dragon Con.

Finished helmet without horns

Almost done.

Loki's Belt Buckle

There are two different belt buckles in the comic.  The one in the interior is just a boring plain oval.  The one of the cover is much more exciting so that's what I decided to go with.

Boar's Head

This sculpt was done by my very talented wife, Tasha.  It goes in the center of Loki's head piece.

Pike Topper

Loki carries a kick-ass pike.  This is the top.  It's just 1/8 inch plastic.  I sanded the edges to make it look like it's sharp, but actually it's very blunt.

Getting some things done

With Dragon Con only three weeks away, I'm in the final push.

I finished up the weather of the armor:

I also have the helmet all painted, I just need to add some weathering:

And I added the leather and fur to the boots, so they are done and ready to go:

The Tunic

The tunic is done!  My wife did a great job with it.

Next up will be the pants.

Helmet getting close

I've made some good progress with the helmet this weekend.

I installed the strap system from bike helmet so now it stays on my head much better.  I also have it primed and ready for painting.

Helmet Topper

I was worried about how I was going to do the top of the helmet.  Thanks to the awesome talent of my father in law, I now have a perfect topper.

Helmet with Horns

Dragon Con is little more than a month away, so I really need to get cracking.

Today I decided to mount the horns to the helmet.  It was one of my biggest technical challenges, but I figured it out.

I think it looks pretty awesome.

Now I need to do a lot more work to the helmet.  I have to fabricate the top portion, some ornamentation for the front, and rig some kind of strap system on the inside, because it's so heavy right now it just falls right off.

I also need to finish puttying the sanding the horns and get them ready to paint.

Making Armor

Sorry for the delay.  I was really busy with all kinds of stuff.  Now suddenly Dragon Con seems right around the corner, so I need to start making some serious progress.

Since I have the horns under control, although I have no idea how to attach them to the helmet, or even how I'm going to make a helmet, I decided to get the armor bits out of the way.

I ordered some 1/8 inch gray sintra to use for the armor.  2'x4' sheets were found on Amazon for $4.00 each with free shipping thanks to Amazon Prime.

I made a cardboard template for the shape I wanted and then traced it onto the plastic.  I then used a small jig saw to cut out the pieces.

After I had the shapes cut out, I heated each piece of plastic with a heat gun until they became malleable.  Then I used an empty spray paint can I had laying around to shape the plastic.  Done.  Instant forearm armor.

I still need to do more work on them.  In the comic they have large rubies in the back of them.  I have to dig something up and get the epoxy out.  I also have to attach them to the costume once I have that sewn up.  But at least I got the ball rolling.

Progress Delays

I apologize for not having updated for a while.  First it was the holidays and now I'm working on a new room.

We had a room in our basement that was mostly unfinished and the parts that were finished were done very haphazardly 40 years ago, so I needed to gut everything and start over.

Once this room is complete it will be my comic room, LEGO room and costuming room.

So rather than try to work on my costume in cramped quarters in between working on the new room, I decided to put the costume on hold until my room is finished.  I'm making great progress, so hopefully I'll be done in the next few weeks.  Then I'll have a nice clean, organized work space and should be able to forge ahead rapidly.

Here are some progress shots:
